Keys to a successful DJ & Musician Duo:

Some KEY things (pun intended) I’ve learned to make an unforgettable performance with a string musician:

  1. Playing in Key: Talk to the musician to find out which keys are preferred and which to avoid (when possible). Some electronic songs are in different keys that make it more difficult for the musician to play along to.

  2. Music Style & Genres: Discuss the genres you may be playing in advance. Some hip hop and pop songs have little to no breaks in the song. Find out what works best to make sure there’s room for the musician to perform.

  3. Practice: If you have not yet worked with the musician, send them a playlist of recorded sample so that they get a feel for how you will play.

  4. Communicate: Communicate before, during and after the performance to make sure you are in sync. Sometimes visual cues can be helpful to be able to communicate while the performance is happening.

Since 2019, Amy Serrano (Pepper, like the Serrano pepper) and I (Pocket) have been collaborating and entertaining as Pepper & Pocket. We first met performing for my friend and real estate agent’s wedding (S/O Real Estate Jay). Since then we have played together for corporate events, luxury events, conventions, nightclubs and bars. We have even had a few travel gigs together, one of them all the way in London, UK!
